چکیده

We demonstrate that Ethernet local area network (LAN) traffic is statistically self-similar, that none of the commonly used traffic models is able to capture this fractal behavior, that such behavior has serious implications for the design, control, and analysis of high-speed, cell-based (B-ISDN) networks, and that aggregating streams of such traffic typically intensifies the selfsimilarity ("burstiness") instead of smoothing it. Intuitively, the critical characteristic of this self-similar traffic is that there is no natural length of a "burst": at every time scale ranging from a few milliseconds to minutes and hours, similar-looking traffic bursts are evident. Our conclusions are supported by a rigorous statistical analysis of hundreds of millions of high quality Ethernet traffic measurements collected between 1989 and 1992, coupled with a discussion of the underlying mathematical and statistical properties of self-similarity and their relationship with actual network behavior. We also consider some implications for congestion control in B-ISDN and present traffic models based on self-similar stochastic processes. Selfsimilar traffic models provide simple, accurate, and realistic descriptions of traffic scenarios encountered during B-ISDN deployment.

Providing Quality of Service to Computer Networks through Traffic Modeling: Improving the Estimation of Bandwidth and Data Loss Probability

The seminal paper published by Leland et al. triggered a new direction on traffic modeling research, by unveiling the fractal nature of network traffic processes (Leland, Taqqu, Willinger, Wilson, & Bellcore, 1994). These authors experimentally demonstrated that the LAN Ethernet traffic collected in Bellcore Morristown Research and Engineering Center exhibits self-similar properties and burstin...

Bandwidth allocation for self-similar traffic consisting of multiple traffic classes with distinct characteristics

It is now generally accepted that modern network traffic (for example, Ethernet, VBR and Web) is ‘self-similar’ in nature, i.e., the statistical characteristics of the traffic stream remains largely unchanged when examined at several different scales. One appropriate model for self-similar traffic is Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM). The main contribution of this paper is to formulate and verif...

A MODEL FOR SELF - SIMILAR ETHERNET LAN TRAFFIC : DESIGN , IMPLEMENTATION , ANDPERFORMANCE IMPLICATIONSYing

This paper presents a synthetic workload model that is capable of modeling self-similar Ethernet traac. The design of the model is presented, along with a brief description of its implementation in SimKit, a C ++-based simulation interface to support eecient parallel simulation on Shared Memory TimeWarp (SMTW). Preliminary simulation results are presented comparing the cell loss and cell delay ...

Measurement and Modelling of Self-Similar Traffic in Computer Networks

We report results from the analysis of traffic measured over a departmental switched Ethernet. Self-similar characteristics are seen throughout the network, for example at the compute servers, web server and intermediate routers. We show that data shipped by the web server (i.e. including both static files from a filer server and dynamically-generated data) has a heavy-tailed distribution which...
